Fresh Face: Rue Melo

Though she's no gum shoe (she started working with producer Bemd Bergdorf - who's worked with Tom Waits and Pink - in 2005), Rue Melo's music is raw enough to consider her a fresh face for the Latin Alternative music scene.

The Uruguayan/French urban pop princess writes and records her own music, sings in three languages (English, French, and Spanish), and even creates some of her own beats.

Rue performs with a band comprised of bassist Bryan Bush, drummer Idris al-Mutazz Tate, and guitarist Claudio Tomasello, and has hits including "Can't Deny" and "Check It" which was featured in the first episode of The Hills season 4.

She lists Bob Marley, Lauryn Hill, Aaliyah, Orishas, Alicia Keys, Biggie, and Lil Wayne as her influences and, although she is unique in her own right, she reminds me of a mix between Lumidee and Pink (In her early, "There You Go" days).

Let Me Put You On: Choc Quib Town

If The Fugees, Immortal Technique and Yerba Buena merged to create one sound, the result would be Choc Quib Town.

Choc Quib Town (Chocó Quibdo Nuestro pueblo) is a Colombian Latin hip hop/funk group whose music invokes pride for their mother country but, more specifically, their place of birth: Chocó.

Chocó is a state in the Pacific Coastal region of Colombia, a place full of "flavor and open hearts, of tears and struggle and of people with the hope of survival." Chocó is also known for the plight of AfroColombians living in the area - a reoccurring theme in Choc Quib Town's music.

Aside from hip hop and funk, fans can find rumba and rural sounds that go along with their tight flow and high energy. I've found a lot of Latin hip-hop bands to sound pretty hokey and sub-par, but I could see Choc Quib Town finding mainstream success in the future.

The group just released their latest album, Oro, and will be playing a few shows in Colombia and Brazil.

Rockera Extrordinaire - Ceci Bastida

It's hard to stave off musical success when your resume includes lead vocalist and keyboardist for the legendary Latin Ska band Tijuana No! and back-up vocalist and keyboardist for Latin Alternative phenom Julieta Venegas, but now Tijuana native Ceci Bastida will come of musical age with the release of her debut solo album Veo La Marea, set to release in 2009.

I've listened to a lot of musicians over my 22 years of existence and I have to say - the girl's got a gift. She's funky, talented and rocks major musical swagger, but (for whatever reason) she is currently under the radar. Her sound is a blend of Julieta Venegas and The Ting Tings, but with an undeniable edge. My favorite track of hers is "Cuando Vuelvas a Caer." If you're looking for a new artist to brighten up your iPod or Zune, Ceci Bastida would be a great choice.

Ceci will be opening for Ozomatli December 14th at The Filmore in San Francisco and December 19th at the House of Blues in Los Angeles.

Monte Negro @ Roxy Theater

If you like your punk mixed with reggae, rock, new wave, and bilingual lyrics then you'll love the Los Angeles-based super group, Monte Negro.

The fantastic foursome released their album Cicatrix on August 5th and will be playing Hollywood's Roxy Theater with fellow Latin Alternative stars Pilar Diaz and Beatmo this Thursday, November 20th.

Cypress Hill's Eric Bobo To Release Debut Album

Eric Bobo, percussionist behind the iconic multi-platinum hip hop group (and first Latin hip hop group to go platinum) Cypress Hill, will release his debut solo album, Meeting of the Minds this Tuesday, November 18th. Bobo will also perform that night in Los Angeles for the Latin Rap Conference.

Eric Bobo (Born Eric Correa) is the son of Latin Jazz percussionist (and legend) Willie Bobo, and has worked with some of music's biggest names: Beastie Boys, Ella Fitzgerald, Smashing Pumpkins, Mike Shinoda (of Linkin Park fame ), Rage Against the Machine, y mas.

Bobo has a chameleon-like ability to blend and incorporate different generes of music from hip hop to rock, jazz, and even metal. With an eclectic tracklisting and long list of collaborations, this album will truly be a Meeting of the Minds.

On Thursday night the entire Latin music community celebrated the 9th annual Latin Grammy's in Houston, Texas.

Highlites of the evening include:
* A performance by the night's multi-award-winning artist, Juanes (who named Soda Stereo's Gustavo Cerati as one of his inspirations - go Gustavo!) and John Legend (one of my favorites)

* Gloria Estefan being honored as Person of the Year

* Cafe Tacvba performing "Esta Vez"

* Julieta Venegas getting down to an accordion jam session while performing "El Presente" with the squeeze box backings of Norteno artist Michael Salgado, Veallenato artist Emiliano Zuleta, Tango artists Fernando Ortero and Hector del Curto, and Tejano star David Lee Garza

One thing is certain - Latin Alternative music was definitely represented in a positive (and award-winning) light. World - take notice!

BARACK AND ROLLIN' - Celebrating the election with style

Instead of watching the elections in bed, like I normally would, I partied with
Remezcla.com and Voto Latino at their Election Night Party at SOB's. Watching the results come in on big screens in the middle of club, cheering along with a hyped up crowd, listening to the DJs spinning music during commercial breaks, and hearing hip hop artist Malverde spit some spoken word was an awesome experience. Congrats to President-Elect Barack Obama and Vice President-Elect Joe Biden, Remezcla.com, and Voto Latino for pulling off an amazing night.

Alejandra Alberti made an appearance on Univision's popular gossip show, Escandolo TV, today to promote her new single "Blanco Fatal." The single showcases Alejandra's beautiful voice and musicality, and the video, although a tad dark, showcases her artistic side. I think it's a great follow up to her power anthem "Dignidad de Mujer."

Ragin' Invasion

The College Music Journal (CMJ) kicked off their annual Music Marathon and Film Festival last night. For the 28th year in a row, indie artists from April Smith to Zimbabwe Legit have invaded the big apple, taking over the city's hottest music venues.

Much like the Latin Alternative Music Conference, the CMJ Music Marathon and Film Festival brings together fans, artists, filmmakers, and industry pros the world over through panels, events, and, of course, performances.

Though the artists span a variety of genres, Latin Alternative acts are not in short supply. Zigmat, Monareta, Cuchillo, Maniqui Lazer, Los Fancy Free, and Todosantos are just some of the artists bringing the LA flavor to this year's marathon.

Vamanos Pa'l ...RIO!

Today marks the release of the highly-anticipated 11th album from Latin Alternative pioneers, Aterciopelados. Recorded in their hometown of Bogotá and mixed by Hector Castillo [of Brazilian Girls, Gustavo Cerati and David Bowie fame], Rio [River] is a passionate, socially-conscious album that continues to stay true to the duo's signature rock sound.

Like their Latin Grammy award-winning album, Oye [Listen], Rio calls fans to action. "Errante Diamante" [Wandering Diamond] is the theme song behind "Destierro y Reparacion" [Exile and Reparation], a Colombian project focused on forced displacement and its effects on society, and "Bandera" [Flag], another single on the album, takes on immigration. "Rio," the albums first single, takes its inspiration from a Colombian referendum dedicated to the basic rights of the country's bodies of water.

There's a certain soulfulness to "Rio" that keeps me playing it over and over. It's definitely worth a listen. Andrea Echeverri, the voice behind the duo, says musically and lyrically, the track is unlike any previous Aterciopelados song. "I'm even singing in a different way than in the past. With this one, we reached an entirely new place," she adds.

Echeverri and Hector Buitrago make beautiful music together and with a unique range of guest artists [Gloria "Goyo" Martinez of the Colombian hip hop act Choc Quib Town and the Andean group Kapary Walka to name a few] Rio will not only meet Oye's success - it will surpass it!

If you listen to the radio for even a half-hour each day, I'm sure you've heard the new Sean Kingston single, "There's Nothin'." Well, not only does the song feature Hip-Hop staple Juelz Santana, but it also features The DEY - the up-and-coming Latin Alternative/Hip-Hop group we featured back when the trio was MTV Tr3s's "Discubre y Download" artist of the month.

Élan makes the Kingston single, holding it down with her hot vocals on the pop track, while Divine and Yeyo showcase their rhymes and urban hip-hop style.

Locos Por Juana CD Release Party

If you're in the New York City area, hop down to the West Village tomorrow to celebrate the CD release of the Latin Grammy Nominated band, Locos por Juana at Latin Alternative hot spot SOB's (Sounds of Brazil).

Their new album, La Verdad, is the group's third album and features musical guests such as Toy Selectah (who has worked with Julieta Venegas and Calle 13), AT Molina (who has worked with Huey Dunbar of DLG, Mariah Carey, and Hector Manuelle), and Beatsmith (who has worked with THE DEY and Lil Wayne).

Pacha Massive just posted their latest video for their single, "All Good Things" on youtube yesterday, and believe me when I say that both the song and the video should be a mainstay on your playlist.

The Bronx-duo that make up Pacha Massive are famous for their chill rhythms and hot lyrics. New York City serves as one of the main characters of the video as Maya and Nova take you through a laidback back tour that features a roof top jam session, a walk through the city streets, an apartment sing-a-long featuring members of the Remezcla.com staff, and a record store purchase of some albums including label-mate Manu Chao's La Radiolina.

As some of you may not have known, the reason the source has not been able to fill you in on the latest Latin Alternative news is because she just received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Syracuse University. She graduated magna cum laude(3.6 GPA) in magazine journalism from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and Spanish language, literature, and culture from Syracuse University's College of Arts and Sciences. SU celebrated their 154th Commencement on mother's day along with SUNY ESF. The guest speaker was ABC Journalist Bob Woodruff and the ceremony was held in SU's famous Carrier Dome. Almost 5,000 students graduated.

The source is back in the Bronx and amped for all the Latin Alternative upcoming events in NYC. It's going to be one hot summer!

Countdown to the LAMC

The 9th annual Latin American Music Conference (LAMC) is less than 2 months away and LA fans across the globe are tense with anticipation over who's coming, who's playing, and where (or maybe that's just me...), but as July 8th gets closer and closer more and more clues are being released as to what we can expect from the cutting-edge music conference.

The purpose of the five-day conference is to provide networking opportunities for Latin Alternative artists, label executives, journalists, marketers, managers, retailers and programmers. However, the LAMC is also a great opportunity to acclimate LA fans with their favorite artists and those new to the scene.

The conference will be headquarter-ed at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City from July 8th - July 12th. Past conferences have avereaged over 1,250 antendees from the music industry, and approximately 25,000 fans who have frequented LAMC events each year.

The conference is great for fans of all budgets as there will be free concerts at Central Park SummerStage and Celebrate Brooklyn Festivals, and paid events including a variety of showcases, industry panels, film screenings, and art exhibits for those registered for the LAMC.

Manu Chao will be releasing a new Politik Kills EP digitally this Tuesday, April 22nd before releasing the EP in stores on June 3rd. The new release will feature a collection of reggae remixes of 'La Radiolina" by artists like UK icons Linton Kwesi Johnson and Dennis Bovell and Island Records founder Chris Blackwell

Voto Latino Debuts at #1 on iTunes

Voto Latino, a 15-track album to benefit the leading non-partisan organization for Latino youth voter empowerment - Voto Latino, debuted at #1 on the iTunes Latino Album Sales Chart, on its first day of sale.

The album features songs by Pitbull, Don Omar, Aterciopelados, Aventura, David Garza, and Ozomatli and costs a mere $3.99 to purchase on iTunes. The song, "Across the Waters," is a previously-unreleased song by Miami's on rapero, Pitbull, based on the strugglees faced by Cuban Immigrants. This is a song the hip-hop hero feels emotionally connected to.

"To me it's great to have a record like 'Across the Waters' involved with Voto Latino/iTunes because it represents everything we [Latinos] stand for, which is the struggle for freedom and opportunity," says Pitbull in a press release by Nacional Records, the label who released the album.

Hollywood starlet Rosario Dawson, and That 70's Show's Wilmer Valderrama are the co-founders of Voto Latino. Both starred in a widely circulation telenovela parody public service announcement to get the word out on their organization and the power of the Latino vote.

The organization was founded in 2004 as a non-partisan organization "that works to promoe an enfranchised America by leveraging celebrity voices, the latest technology and youth themselves to promote positive change and voter empowerment throught the Latino community."

Voto Latinos hopes to reach the 7 million American Latino voters ages 18-29/18% of the American youth vote and get them out to the polls for Novembers' 2008 elections.

Nacional Records and iTunes will donate the proceeds from the album to Voto Latino's voter registration, education, and empowerment initiative.

LFC Back on Tour

After lots of rumors and speculations, the iconic Argentinian band Los Fabulosos Cadillacs is back on tour. They are also going back to the studio to record a new album! Since they never really broke up the band is not calling it a comeback but it looks a lot like one. It's an exiting time in Rock en Español and Latin Alternative with all these important old bands (Soda Stereo, Heroes del Silencio, LFC) back on the stage. LFC is my personal favorite Spanish band and I'm extremely exited that they are back. I've seen them live and they put one hell of a show. Plus they have a new kicking myspace!

This past weekend Mexican Latin Alternative sensations, Nortec Collective Presents: Bostich + Fussible, rocked the people of Berlin at the Maerz Musik Festival and gave them a little taste of their upcoming album, Tijuana Sound Machine. Word on the street is Berlin knows how to party.

For all you Nortec fans, the digital release of Tijuana Sound Machine is scheduled for April 29th, and the CD will be released on May 6th, so mark your calenders and check with your local record store to see if they have love for Nortec.

666 Style - Upcoming Release for Davila 666

Almost two years after their 2006 release, countless shows and, parties hosted by Jack Daniels Studio #7, Davila 666 has brought their catchy melodies and raw energy into an upcoming release.

The band will be releasing a new album late this spring under indie label, In the Red Recordings. Davila 666 is also the first band to sing in Spanish on the California-based label. Following the release, they plan on touring places such as Mexico, the United States, Canada, and Europe.

Sir Charles Davila, AJ Davila, Johnny Otis Davila, San Pablo Davila, Panda Davila, and Gigi Davila form to create the mayhem that is Davila 666. The band was formed in December 2005 with a mission to explore the sounds of the decades past, more pecifically, the 60s and early 70s, claiming that the music seems much more honest & brutal. The band’s first album, Punales, Pildoras y Otras Formas de Entretenerse, includes a total of nine songs and was released in 2006 under their own label, EZ Kill Records. Their song “Mientras Sono (Dale, Dale)” was included in the Jack Daniel’s Studio #7 compilation CD. The band has also played shows with Los Pepiniyoz, Circo, and Polbo.

Davila 666 is a band associated with controversy and while the numeric connotations of their name might always remain a mystery, we spoke to A.J. Davila about the upcoming album, future plans, and the Davila family. It involved eating babies, and all sorts of satanic talk, of course.

--How did it all start for Davila 666?
AJ: The group was founded in December 2005 by Sir Charles and AJ Davila (Myself). We are a really young band. We used to sell crack and chicken eggs on the street for a living...but shit got pretty fucked up and our little brother, Papo Cadaver, was killed by Violeta la Sacacorcho Rosario, a local transsexual drug lord. We called it quits and started the band with our brothers. You know we are big family five brothers, five sisters, seven cows, and 10 chickens.

-- Can you describe Davila's sound?
AJ: The most important thing when we make songs is to have catchy vocal melodies; it doesn’t matter if we make garage, rock and roll, country blues, folk, etc. - the vocal melody has to be catchy. So I think that’s our sound- we call it the pop sensation.

--So how’s life for the big family so far?
AJ: Everything is great. Good things are coming for the band. We just signed a deal with In the Red Records (one of the best independent labels in America). We are the first band that sings in Spanish on the label, [and] we have a big tour coming up, so we are really happy.

--When will the tour begin and what are some places you guys will be rocking out in?
AJ: We will start touring right after the album is out. [We’re touring] Mexico, the United States, Canada, and maybe Europe and South America. We want to tour as much as we can.

--So what’s your favorite place to play and where have you guys toured before?
AJ: My favorite place? Seattle and San Francisco. We have been on tour in New York, Tijuana, Mexicali, San Diego, Los Angeles, Glendale, Oakland, San Francisco, Portland, Olympia, and Seattle (September -October 2007).

---What should we expect from the new CD?
AJ: You can expect a stab in the ass with the album; catchy music made by poor, hungry Puerto Ricans.

-- What is your favorite Davila 666 song?
AJ: All of them - they are my children, but my favorite is, “Dimelo Ya.”

---I’m going to ask you the most cliché question that you’ve ever gotten: why Davila 666?
AJ: Jajajaja, why not Davila 666?

--Have you had any problems booking a show because of your name?
AJ: One time, in Peru, we had a problem booking shows because they thought we were a death metal band.

---Are you a crazy satanic cult?
AJ: Yes. We drink blood and eat babies...all in the name of pop music.

--What are your words to live by? Give me a good phrase that doesn’t involve babies or satanic cults.
AJ: Always have fun....and don’t be a fucking snitch.

Soft Spot: "De Que Sirve"

"De Que Sirve" is an infectious, pop rock hit with saccharin sweet vocals and melody that work its way into your mind until your singing along with the track. It barely counts as Latin Alternative, but in my mind, they have LA street cred. Let's face it - if Belanova's "Baila Mi Corazon" is considered Alternative, everyone's got a fair shot. Plus, they're no where near as popular as Mexi-Pop sensation RBD so they're still safe. And bands who play their own instruments will always have an edge over run of the mill, generic, pop acts. To me, they're a mix between Paramore and BBmak, and despite what hardcores have to say - "De Que Sirve" is still cool and will continue to play on my iPod for days to come.

The 9th annual Latin Alternative Music Conference will take place July 8th - 12th at the Roosevelt Hotel. The event features prominent artists, as well as the music industry's biggest decision-makers, coming together for panels, live performances, showcases, film screenings, art exhibits, y mas.

Free concerts at Central Park SummerStage and Celebrate Brooklyn Festival, are on the agenda for the 2008 LAMC. Past conferences saw 1,250 music industry attendees and 25,000 concert fans each year.

"Major music events like the 9th Annual Latin Alternative Music Conference draws music fans from around the world to New York City," says New York City Mayor, Michael Bloomberg. "Through the work of the Latin Media and Entertainment Commission, New York has been able to attract and retain major Latin events generating millions in economic activity for our City. Noteworthy: "The Truth"

"The Truth" is a hit song by the Trip Hop/Electronica group Si*Se. The group, made up of vocalist - Carol C, violinist - Tarrah Reynolds, percussionist - Neil Ochoa, programmer and keys - U.F. Low, drummer - Farley, and bassist - Morgan Phillips, has had their music featured on Sex and the City, One Tree Hill, and Six Feet Under, and have shared the stage with top acts like Norah Jones, Cesaria Evora, and James Brown.

"The Truth" is a love song that lulls listeners into submission with Carol C's sweet, yet vulnerable vocals. For lack of an actual video, I selected a One Tree Hill montage (dedicated to my little sister because it's her favorite show ;). With instrumentals reminiscent of a Spanish lullaby, "The Truth" has an addictive and sexy quality that is sure to hook anyone within ear shot.

As mentioned in a previous post, Si*Se will be playing alongside Los Amigos Invisibles from February 6th - 12th for a series of West Coast Performances at various House of Blues locations and two shows at the Independent in San Francisco.

Noteworthy: "Te Comes Lo Que Dices"

The first single off the "power pop rock" trio's 2007 album Perfume Panetera, "Te Comes Lo Que Dices" captures the boys from Liquits (Edi, Ro, & Teo) rocking at their finest. "Te Comes Lo Que Dices" is a fast-paced, hyperactive kind of song that builds until you're bouncing around, rocking out on air guitar, and just plain enjoying yourself.

La Nueva Oreja?

The Spanish Alternative Scene recieved a huge blow on November 20th when La Oreja de Van Gogh (Van Gogh's Ear) announced that their sugary, sweet-voiced siren, Amaia Montero, would be leaving the band after 11 years as lead singer. Montero made this announcement in order to pursue a solo career.

As fans absorbed the shock and felt the loss, the rumor mills began to spin. At one point it was rumored that Mexican pop-sensation, Paulina Rubio, would serve as the bands lead singer. The latest rumor was that Edurne García, winner of the Spanish, American Idol-esque reality TV show, Operación Triunfo (Canal Satélite Digital), would become the new lead singer.

However, the group announced on their blog that the Edurne García rumors, were just that - rumors. They encourage fans to be patient and not believe everything they read/hear.

Café is scheduled to perform on Saturday April 26th, the second day of the festival. This year’s festival also includes performances by MIA, Kraftwerk, Portishead, I’m from Barcelona, Tegan and Sara, Vampire Weekend, and Architecture in Helsinki, among others.

Meme, Cone Cahuitl, Quique and Joselo, better known as Café Tacvba have been together since 1989 and have been stirring up the Latin Alternative scene ever since. They are best known for one of their early songs, the corky sounding “La Ingrata” and their 1994 album Re. Café Tacvba also won the 2004 Latin Grammy award for Best Alternative Music Album with their album Cuatro Caminos.

Their latest album, Sino was released in October 2007 featuring the hit single “Volver a Comenzar.” Ranging from electronic to rock and even punk, their music is eclectic, fun, and just plain good. They also played last summer’s Lollapalloza alongside other icons like Pearl Jam, Daft Punk, Stephen Marley, and Iggy & the Stooges.

Even though DJ Bitman is out on his own, doing big things, let's not forget about his past as part of the DJ-ing duo Bitman y Roban. Their song "Tatita" combines '80s and 90's hip-hop with smooth lounge rhythms and signature scratching technique. With infusions of Kurtis Blow's "These are the Breaks" and Naughty By Nature's "Clap Yo Hands," "Tatita" is a cool, yet calm way to kick back and blow off some steam. Enjoy.

Plastilina Mosh is currently in the studio working on their next album which is said to be "a crazy-rocked-out musical adventure a la Monterrey!"

The Alterna-Rock group was formed in 1996 by Alejandro Rosso and Juan José González (best known as Jonás) in Monterrey. Their sound is best described as a combination of "'60's sleazy-listening, '70s disco/funk, '80s punk/new wave, and '90s hip hop all microwaved to perfection."

Their last album was 2003's Hola Chicuelos, with notable singles "Peligroso Pop" and "Te Lo Juro por Madonna" but it was 1998's Aquamosh that contained their hit song, "Mr. Pmosh"

Plastilina Mosh have been compared to Basement Jaxx, The Chemical Brothers, and Fat Boy Slim but here's what critics have to say:

The Rolling Tones

The boys from Barcelona are kicking it hard core in 2008. The Pinker Tones are releasing their new album, Wild Animals, on April 29th and headlining Vans Warped Tour where they will play alongside Gym Class Heroes, Everytime I Die, Relient K, The Academy Is..., and many more top bands.

The duo seemed to take over the world in 2007 as a subject of a New York Times feature and an A&E special, a performance on KCRW's "Morning Becomes Eclectic," and a song featured on "Ugly Betty" and "Entourage." The Pinker Tones also received heavy play on mtvU, MTV Tr3s, Mun2, and LATV. But perhaps it was their SXSW performance where they performed five shows in 36 hours, blowing the audience at KCRW’s Sounds Eclectic Evening in Los Angeles away alongside leading artists like The Shins, Lily Allen and Rodrigo and Gabriela. Their latest single “Karma Hunters” was also selected as the theme song for Mun2's popular reality show ‘Chicas Project’.

With the success of their 2006 debut The Million Colour Revolution and their 2007 remix album More Colours!, the group plans to expand with their next album, hitting fans with a variety of vocal guests including Jimmy Lindsay from groundbreaking 1970s Jamaican funk group Cymande and Amparo from Spanish reggae-rock band Amparanoia.
